Squanto's Adventure

In the pouring rain twelve beasts emerged from the forest. They had features of a bird and a lizard combined into an angular body. These dinosaurs had claws the size of two spearheads and could outrun any other creature. They were staring at the small village near the river. They were called the velociraptors, the most feared creature in the forest. They ran toward the sleeping village. The hunt had begun. A family had gone to bed for the night. They stayed in the grandest hut in the village. It was the chief, his wife and his son. In the center of the hut there was a blazing fire; their beds and blankets were made out of the finest dinosaur hide. The only problem with the hut was the dinosaur hide was made of velociraptor skin and that was what drew them in. The dinosaurs had smelt the hide from a mile away. They had thought that the hides were fellow velociraptors that had come to take over their territory. When they arrived at the village they realized that they were mistaking and they decided to not let their journey go to waste by catching a meal. Two of them had slipped into the center of the city without being noticed and enter the chiefs hut. Then they each chose a sleeping victim. The creatures gave each victim a precise bite killing them so quickly that they didn’t have a chance to wake up. They swallowed their victims whole and returned to the forest. That night no one awoke except a crying baby that the dinosaur had forgot in the hut.

A boy named Squanto awoke early in the morning to meet his friend by the center of the village. They were outcast of the village. Both of them were orphans and one of them was a mute. They had lost their families thirteen years ago in the last dinosaur assault on the village. They met here every day to receive their daily tasks from the fishing sage. Once they received their duties they would work all day until lunch then they would be done.
“Hello,” said Squanto.
“You late,” said the Fishing Sage, “Where other boy?” The nameless mute child was standing right behind the fishing sage. No one could remember the name that his parents gave him, so he was often referred to as the “Other Boy” because he was always with Squanto. The mute tapped the back of the fishing sage to let him know that he was here. For some reason he was always “disappearing.”
“Today you untangle fish net and fix pier,” order the Fishing Sage. Squanto and the other boy ran off towards the river.
When Squanto was running he wasn’t paying attention to what he was doing and he knocked over every support lines of each tent leaving a trail of collapsed tents behind him. He arrived at the river to see that the mute was already working on untangling the nets. Squanto always wondered how the nets get so tangled every day and how a pier breaks every month. He ignored the coincidence and grabbed a net and got to work. By the time the sun was at the top of the sky, Squanto’s hands were bleeding. Squanto was getting hungry and the rest of the nets and piers could wait to tomorrow. He went to the town center of the village to get something to eat.
They had arrived at the town center at the food rush. The people in the village got food in order of social rank, so the other boy and Squanto would be the last to eat food. To pass the time they sat by the rock pile near the fire. Eventually they were throwing rocks back and forth near the fire. There was a bad toss and Squanto without thinking ran and dove to catch it. As he dove he knocked over a bucket of water and it fell on the fire. Everyone looked over to the dying fire as if the end of the world was about to start there. Since the last fire-builder was eaten by a dinosaur last full-moon, the people in the village have been keeping that last fire going for twenty days. Without a word being said the village warriors took Squanto to village’s temple. They had taken him there so that everyone could fit in one area to decide what to do.
“What have we to do with the boy?” said the Chief.
“Me think we to sacrifice him to the dinosaurs and then sky spirits give us fire in return,” said the Fishing Sage.
“No, I got better idea.” began the Shaman, “There a mountain beyond forest and great desert that has firewater inside it. This firewater is what first gave fire to our village before we learned how to make it and I think boy and his mute friend is chosen to return fire to our village.”
“Me thinks we eat boy and get fire water ourselves,” said the Butcher.
“It dangerous path to Firewater Mountain,” said the Shaman” and it written that the chosen ones are only allowed to get fire water by Mountain Guardian.”
“Why they chosen ones, “asked the butcher.
“It written that the first chosen ones were both orphans, so these two were chosen to as well.”
“So it decided Squanto and the other boy will leave tomorrow morning,” said the Chief.
There was cheer from the audience. Though everyone else was satisfied, Squanto was terrified. He had always feared dinosaurs for what they did to his parents, and how they had changed his life. He had also wondered who was the Mountain Guardian and why they would let two orphans get the fire water and not the tribe warriors. He would soon find out. At least he was going to be eaten by the villagers.
The next morning he had started getting early. The sun hadn’t even risen over the nearby forest. He went over to the river to meet the mute boy. There they filled up their water sacks. Squanto went over to the cart used to store the fish. He grabbed some of yesterdays catch. As he was walking away he tripped over a stump and fell onto the cart pushing it into the river. As he watched it fall into the river he saw hundreds of fish fall into the river. Then to avoid more trouble he wanted to leave before anyone would notice. Maybe the Fishing Sage will think that some dinosaurs took it or something.
Squanto looked at the other boy and said, “We go now.”
On their way out of the village they stopped at the Shaman’s hut to get directions. They arrived at a shack that was alone by itself at the edge of the village. It was surrounded by bones of dinosaurs. They entered the mysterious shack. When they were inside there was nothing there but an eerie blue smoke, some fruit and a dinosaur hide bed. The Shaman wasn’t there. After examining the contents of the shack They turned around and the Shaman was right behind them.
“You look for me,” asked the Shaman.
“Yes, we know where our quest ends, but don’t know how to get there, “said Squanto.
“To get to Firewater Mountain you must travel through the forest until you get to Great Plain,” said the Shaman, “But beware the Great Plain there are creatures more furious than the velociraptors. If you do not wish to travel through the Great Plain you may travel around it by continuing through the forest, but the path through the plains are quicker. Once you are through the plains you will be at a desert. Then you will be able to see the Firewater Mountain in the horizon.”
“Thank you,” said Squanto as he started to leave.
“One more thing,” said the Shaman, “You will need this to carry firewater.”
“A bucket, Me just put firewater in me water sack.”
“No fire water very hot and burn through water sack. You need this.”
“Thanks,” said Squanto as he took the bucket and left the shack.
They started their journey through the thick forest. After ten minutes of walking, the forest was so thick that they barely could see what was only a few steps ahead of them. They walked for what seemed like forever. As the sun was setting, the forest was turning into an absolute darkness. They knew the needed to make camp somewhere soon. Squanto sat down on a fallen tree and started to un pack his bag.
“We sleep here,” Squanto told the mute boy.
When he looked over at the mute boy there was a velociraptor standing right behind him. The creature towered over the boy. It probably could eat him in one bite.
“Dinosaur!” Yelled Squanto.
Squanto took off running to get away from the predacious monster. The creature had completely ignored the mute boy and went chasing after Squanto. Squanto ran to the tree in front of him and started climbing, but that was no use; the velociraptor was there in a few strides. Not knowing what to do next, Squanto threw his bag at the monster hoping for the miracle that it would scurry away in pain. The bag had no affect on the dinosaur until it sensed what was inside it. Squanto’s bag still had the fish in it. The dinosaur reach its long neck down to grab the fish. This gave Squanto time to climb higher in the tree so that the dinosaur could not reach him. The dinosaur saw that he would not be having Squanto for dinner and ran away passing right by the mute boy. Instead of sleeping on the ground they had decided to sleep in a tree to avoid any more confrontations with dinosaurs.
The next morning they had gotten up early to resume their quest. The mute boy had taken the fish out of his bag that was not eaten by the dinosaur last night. They climbed down the tree and started walking again. Half way through the day the forest was receding to grasslands. The whole time Squanto had a feeling that they were being followed. All around them there were these tiny dinosaurs barely a foot tall. They were everywhere. When they reached the Great Plain they found out why there were so many of these dinosaur. As far as they could see there were nest and in those nests were dinosaur eggs. Squanto picked up an egg to examine it. As he was setting it down he dropped it. When it broke open there was an unformed dinosaur. It was almost identical to the dinosaurs that were running around everywhere in the forest. The dinosaurs that were in the forest were coming back and saw that he had dropped the egg and they ran over to see what happened. One of them jumped up and bit Squanto on the arm. Squanto ripped him off and started running away into the heart of the nesting area. As he was running he was stepping and breaking on several eggs. Before he knew the total of dinosaurs that were attacking him went from one to over one hundred.
Squanto was running back towards the forest to find a tree to hide in. Then he saw the velociraptor that he had encountered last night. He didn’t know which way to run; into a swarm of tiny dinosaurs or back towards the monster who almost took his life last night. He thought that if he attack the velociraptor it would be so surprised that it would run away, so he started running at the velociraptor. The large dinosaur reached him and before Squanto could do anything it leap right over him. Squanto was amazed that the dinosaur had no interest in him. Then all of the tiny dinosaurs stopped dead in the tracks at the sight of the velociraptor. The large dinosaur would charge at the little dinosaurs that dared to take a step forward. It was like the velociraptor was protecting Squanto.
Squanto and the mute met up at the edge of the forest with the velociraptor following a few steps behind them. Together they decided not to go through the plains anymore and take the long way through the forest. They started their journey through the edge of the forest. That night they found a bush that was filled with berries. They gave the rest of the fish to the velociraptor and stuffed themselves with the berries. That night they slept in a tree again, but this night they felt more comfortable because they had the velociraptor guarding the tree from the ground.
The next morning they had gotten up early as they would everyday to start work on their daily tasks that the Fishing Sage assigned them.
Where is the Dinosaur? Wondered Squanto when he said his thought out loud when he noticed that the velociraptor was gone. They forgot about the dinosaur and started walking. They walked without stopping until they ran into a cliff. It was starting to get dark, so they decided to stay next to the cliff for the night and start climbing in the morning. That night they slept in a crevasse in the side of the cliff face.
In the morning they awoke to find the velociraptor eating another dinosaur at the base of the tree. At first they were intimidated to descend down the tree, but after a while they gained the courage to approach the dinosaur. The dinosaur paid no attention to them when they came down. They left the dinosaur to its feast and began climbing.
The cliff was made out of a soft flaky rock that fell apart every time you would put weight on it. Squanto learned this the hard way; when he was ten feet off the ground he grabbed onto a loose piece of rock and fell straight to the ground. Now he tests every section of the cliff before he puts any weight on it. When Squanto and the mute boy were almost at the top of the cliff the velociraptor climbed to the top of the cliff in just a few leaps. Minutes later the two boys were at the top and were surprised by what they saw. Or what they didn’t see.
When they arrived at the top they were standing in front of a vast desert. There was no landmarks insight except for the top of a mountain on the horizon. They had nothing to do, but start walking into the emptiness. Three days went by without the sight of any life. Yet death was all around them; there were skeletons of dinosaurs that attempted to cross the desert, there were shriveled up plants that tried to make an existence here, and worst of all there were pterodactyls circling them from above waiting for them to die. They knew that if they didn’t get something to drink they would die soon. That night they had gotten lucky and found an oasis in the middle of the desert . Without thinking Squanto ran up to the first tree with fruit he saw and started inhaling all of the fruits. When Squanto offered some of the fruit to the mute he turned it down and went to a more familiar looking tree and started eating. Even the velociraptor had found a bite to eat. It ate the first live animal it saw. Squanto and the mute boy were surprised to be alive since the dinosaur hadn’t eaten them on the journey.
The next morning Squanto wouldn’t wake up. The mute had figured that the fruit that he ate was poisonous. He was going to give up on their quest to get the firewater because if they failed they would be exiled from their filled. They had to make it to the mountain. He knew that he couldn’t carry Squanto the rest of the way to the mountain even though the mountain appeared so close. But the velociraptor could. After collecting vines from the oasis, he tied Squanto onto the back of the dinosaur. Surprisingly the dinosaur didn’t seem to care about the extra weight, so the mute climbed onto the back of it as well. To ruin the mute’s plan the dinosaur wouldn’t move in the direction that he wanted it to go in. The mute boy took a piece of meat and tied it onto a stick, so that it was dangling down. Now when he climbed onto the dinosaur he held to meat in front of its head. Instinctively the dinosaur went towards the meat, yet it wasn’t intelligent enough to figure out that he was not ever going to catch it.
Half way through the day they had made it to Firewater Mountain, around the same time Squanto had woken up.

“Where Mountain Guardian?” asked Squanto.
The mute just responded with a shrug.
The mute started to guide the velociraptor up the mountain. The mountain was made out of a dark red rock. The farther that they journied up the mountain, the stronger the smell of sulfur was get. When they arrived to the top of the mountain they were amazed. For minutes they stared in awe at the glowing red liquid that was boiling within the mountain. Squanto took out the heavy stone bucket that he had carried throughout his journey and gotten off the dinosaur.
“I get firewater now,” said Squanto as he went down into the mountain.
When he was right about the firewater he could feel its intense heat. As he reached down to scoop up some of the firewater he felt as if his blood was boiling and at any moment now his skin would start on fire. The bucket dipped into the firewater and slowly began to fill. Once it was full the bucket had quadrupled in weight. Squanto turned around to exit the mountains crater. Standing right behind the mute boy and the velociraptor was the largest dinosaur Squanto had ever seen. It was three times taller than the velociraptor and its head was large than Squanto’s whole body. It could only be one creature.
“Mountain Guardian!” yelled Squanto.
The mute boy turned around to see what Squanto had seen. Instantly he rode the velociraptor down to get Squanto. Squanto jumped onto the back of the moving dinosaur. The mute lead the dinosaur down the mountain. As they were running down the mountain the Mountain Guardian was gaining on them.
“Faster!” said Squanto.
Just as he said that the Velociraptor tripped and all of them went tumbling down the mountain. Just as they stopped rolling the Mountain Guardian was on top of them. Right beneath the Mountain Guardian was the
velociraptor. Squanto was terrified, but he couldn’t let his new found friend die. He ran up the Mountain Guardian and threw the bucket of firewater onto it. As soon as the firewater touched the Mountain Guardian side it started burn away. Within seconds it burned through the skin leaving the bones and organs showing. The monster had started to scamper away, but within seconds it collapsed to the ground.
Again the mute, the dinosaur, and Squanto made the journey to the top of Firewater Mountain to retrieve the firewater. They started the journey back to Squanto’s village. That night they camped at the oasis and made all the way through the rest of the desert in one day now that they had a quicker way to travel. Again they took the long way around the Great Plain and went back to the village in half the time it took to get to the mountain. When they arrived at the village, everyone was terrified by the velociraptor. After Squanto made a fire by pouring the firewater onto three logs, The Shaman was the first person to approach them.
“There is prophecy,” began the Shaman, “It says that boy that rides on velociraptor will bring peace between the dinosaurs and the people.”
“How am I going to do that,” asked Squanto .
“Me don’t know,” responded the Shaman, “but I will help you by making you chief of our village. The rest will be up to you.
